James Baldwin was indeed one of the most perceptive, forceful and honest public figures of the 20th century. The 100th anniversary of his birth is well worth noting. And his life and work are well worth returning to frequently.

His debate with William F. Buckley at Cambridge University in 1965 is one of many demonstrations of his powerful presence - anyone who hasn't yet heard it should. And many who have heard it often do so again. It is one of a small handful of such oral events I return to from time to time to lift my spirits - a seemingly growing need these days.
